Do you need rebar for concrete patio?

You don’t necessarily have to have rebar for a concrete patio. However, it is recommended. Reinforcement adds tension strength to concrete elements where typically only compressive strength is really provided by concrete itself. Tensile strength in concrete can aid in reducing cracking with concrete patios that are large.

Concrete to Span a Long Distance

If concrete has to span a long distance, the likelihood that a portion of the sub-grade/base/sub-base conditions will be deleterious in the long run increases. With that comes lack of support for the concrete. This can happen due to a number of reasons, like erosion, or settlement or soils and earths, or freeze-thaw cycles and frost heaving. Any way you look at it, without steel or alternate reinforcement measures in your concrete, serious consequences can arise in the longevity of the concrete item. Not only that, but when cracks do arise, you may find even larger damage to the concrete item itself as there is no reinforcement to keep the now separated concrete portions from separating.

Benefits of Adding Steel Reinforcement to Concrete

In summary, here are the benefits of adding steel reinforcement into concrete:

  • Improved tensile strength that allows a concrete patio to withstand more stresses than just downward compressive strength.
  • Reinforcement can improve the ability for a concrete patio to withstand heavy loads on either side, or uneven loads.
  • Reinforcement can help to overcome poor soil conditions and less than adequate sub-grade.
  • Increases the versatility of concrete as a whole, making interesting and unique concrete patio designs possible.

You might find, a simple reinforcement pattern of 15m rebar at 450 mm O.C. for instance suitable. This refers to the type of rebar (size at 15m) and the spacing (450 mm between each bar) where this is typically each-way. The above description forms a grid pattern that might be suitable for a low-load requirement concrete patio.
